Dom Pedro Primeiro15 years short of a couple of centuries ago today, Dom Pedro Primeiro proclaimed the Empire of Brazil – on his 24th birthday.

And for 67 years this country was at the same level of the greatest powers of the 19th century. A military coup-d'état ended a golden age, and for the following years the early republicans would ask "why don't the people cut off the heads of all those who helped to declare the republic, including me? (Quintino Bocaiúva)"
