Rebels Recognized by King of France

Landing of a French auxiliary army in Newport, Rhode Island on July 11, 1780, under the command of Comte de Rochambeau233 years ago today, the Kingdom of France recognized those United States.

Reminds me somewhat of Kaiser Wilhelm II letting Lenin pass through Germany into Russia: thus destroying an enemy, but in the not-so-long run destroying oneself.

Of course, France had little way of knowing the consequences the USA would have (and even if it did, I suspect thanks to men like Lafayette that they still would have gone on).
