According to Karin Mollberg, HIRH Archduke Otto would not have preferred to be a monarch, as he is "too much of a political animal."
It seems that this might be from a Der Spiegel interview (July 2, 2007) by Joachim Kronsbein; „Jawohl, Majestät!” Audienz bei Otto von Habsburg, dem Sohn des letzten Kaisers von Österreich und Königs von Ungarn.

Archduke Otto Too Political to Be Emperor?

I saw at least part of this interview. Evidently he's been luckier than anyone realized, not having to curb his political inclinations for reasons of state. (I wonder about his sons, though.) And, as Otto's said, he defeated his enemies by *outliving* them.
Aquilifer,
I have wondered whether the Archduke Otto would have preferred the role of a "modern monarch." If the Habsburg monarchy had "survived" or been "restored" as a modern-day emasculated monarchy, HIRH would have had to keep his personal political opinions to himself. Moreover, he might have had to oversee and even sign legalization of abortion.
If HIRH as Majesty of course had been a real monarch more in line with monarchs of old, that is, however, a different matter.
We remember the Habsburg monarchy as a real monarchy. In light of that, we too are lucky not to have seen it degenerate into a modern-day emasculated monarchy. The option of old order survival would have been better than both these alternatives though.
I must hasten to add though that there are advantages too with "modern monarchy," notably even figurehead monarchs on the Habsburg and Hohenzollern thrones would probably have prevented the rise of Hitler. To that, of course, nostalgic needs must yield.
BTW, "Aquilifer," may I ask where you saw this interview? From what I understand, this was an in-print interview.
Gentlemen,
the interview with Otto of Habsburg I referred to, was published in the german magazine Der Spiegel. I quoted what he said, from there. Will be happy to try and find the right issue, if you so prefer.
Sincerely,
the above Lady
There is apparently a reference to the interview here.
Thank you so much for your offer, Ms. Mollberg.
