WRU Unplugger of the Year

The WRU Unplugger of the Year need not be a monarchist, nor regret the fall of the Old European Order. The WRU Unplugger of the Year is simply the one who is considered to have done most in bringing about the unplugging of the Wilson Revolution.

The awardee has done an excellent job at bringing about opposition to the American Empire and its philosophical basis, in particular through launching and hosting Freedom Watch at Fox News.

The 2009 WRU Unplugger of the Year is:

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights61 years ago today, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted.

This declaration is a part of the modernist narrative, a narrative that tells us that people had no rights before, in a world of absolute governments, whereas now – with the United Nations having decreed rights – these governments are no longer absolute. This narrative is dubious at best.

There are indeed areas where these decreed rights are a good thing. However, there are areas where vagueness is the most distinct attribute. Moreover, the declaration protects the right to sleep on the couch for someone else's money.

The Nobel Peace Prize

Gösta Florman: Alfred NobelA century and a baker's dozen years ago today, Alfred Nobel passed away. Ever since the 5th anniversary the Nobel Prizes have been awarded, the Memorial Prize not being one of them, but awarded on the same day of the year from a later date.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize Laureate is none other than the sitting American President. He was inaugurated on January 20 of this year. On February 1 the nomination deadline expired. Inauguration day being day 1, February 1 is day 13. Now, for members of the committee slightly different rules apply than for others qualified to nominate. Committee members may present their nominations at the first committee meeting after the deadline has expired.

He was elected on hope, and he was awarded the peace prize on hope. At least there is some consistency in this crazy world.

This blogger does not belong to those who believe the committee has stooped to an unprecedented low level. There are indeed worse warmongers than Obama. The escalation of the current war in Afghanistan is nothing in comparison.

89 years ago, the Persona Non Grata of this weblog was awarded the 1919 prize. In those days, the committee was apparently in no hurry, as the prize was awarded in 1920 – not 1919. The 1919 awarding is, in spite of this, arguably the worst awarding in the history of the prize.

Aurel Kolnai

Aurel Thomas Kolnai109 years ago today, Aurel Thomas Kolnai was born in the number 2 city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Dr. Francis Dunlop wrote a biography on Kolnai back in 2002. It was titled The Life and Thought of Aurel Kolnai. Prof. Graham McAleer reviewed the biography in Modern Age in the summer 2003 issue – A Neglected Political Thinker (PDF).

Graham McAleer writes:

Aurel Thomas Kolnai (1900-1973) passes with flying colors. Indeed, here is a twentieth-century thinker who understands America as a nation suffering still from the original sin of rebellion against King George III!
Further:
Readers who are introduced to Kolnai's profound reservations about democracy immediately want to know what his alternative might be, and the “Carta-Memoria” is quite an alternative. He proposes a mixed regime that includes the Crown, a “National Institute” dependent on the Crown and charged with the task of elevating public taste, and an “active citizenry,” about one sixth of the population, elected for life, who vote for candidates to parliament.
And:
The few scholars who work on Kolnai are divided in their judgments of how sympathetic he was to democracy and to liberalism. As the pages of this biography progress, it becomes clear that Kolnai's conservatism increasingly hardened and became a very subtle “Throne and Altar” position, far removed from either democracy or liberalism. That “Throne and Altar” conservatism could be arrived at by an original and inquiring philosophical mind in the middle of the twentieth century raises serious questions for those who confidently assert that only some version of liberal democracy is “historically available” to us.
